Choosing Crib Bedding Carefully: Important Things To Consider

by Jennie on October 8, 2008

The perfect nursery usually starts with the perfect nursery bedding. You've planned out the perfect nursery, from the furniture set to the wall color - but hold on a second! Babies sleep a lot and so their bedding is very important. Take these things into account before making a decision:

- You baby needs to be comfortable, so choose something soft. Cotton is a natural choice, but look for 100% cotton instead of blends. Knit cotton or flannel are both great choices, but higher-thread-count woven cotton is an option, too.

- Babies have a lot of "accidents", so buy bedding that is machine washable (another great reason to choose cotton).

- Suffocation is a serious concern for young babies, so the first thing to do is make sure the crib sheet fits properly. There are, however, elastic straps designed to improve the fit of your crib sheets, so you can use those if you have any concerns.

- A bedding set might seems like the most economical way to buy bedding, but this is not necessarily true. Most bedding sets include things like crib bumpers and comforters - but these are not recommended for children under a year old. Purchasing separates and leaving out the useless pieces can be significantly cheaper than buying a crib set. Many people buy bedding sets because all the pieces coordinate, but buying separates can reward those with creativity.

- And finally, after taking everything else into consideration, consider the theme of the room and coordinate with the furniture and other accessories you already have.

Buying bedding within your budget can be a concern, but take into account that you may use it longer than you think. By using a convertible crib or a toddler bed that takes standard-sized crib sheets, you can continue to use your bedding for several years. If you're just starting your family and think you might have more children, try neutral crib bedding like the Vintage baby bedding, so that you don't have to keep buying new bedding. You might opt to buy cheaper bedding, though, if you are pretty sure you won't be having more children. Whether you buy expensive bedding or cheap, a set or separates, make sure you buy extras, because you'll need them!
